The exhibition Città irreale combines large-scale and sculptural works from the collection of the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen which relate to a social context. The architectural modules range from elementary dwellings (Büchel, Masüger) to aspects of global mobility (Gramsma) to an environment composed of objects from everyday life (Stockholder).
Nina Beier’s metal pedestal objects from existing horseman monuments will bring attention to the discourse about monuments in public space. Alex Hanimann’s life-size figure ensemble Conversation Piece, which depicts five young people in typical poses of Generation Z, will bring the exhibition out into the foyer of the Ostschweizer Fachhochschule. The House of Friction (Pumpwerk Heimat) by Christoph Büchel in the neighboring water tower functions as an oppressive and uncomfortable installation that makes challenging references to domestic life.
At the same time, the sculptures in the art space of the Lokremise offer an inspiring location for an unusual joint project between the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen and the Theater St. Gallen. Based on problems that we are confronted with during the pandemic, the exhibition poses questions about the effects on social cohesion. In a theatrical audio tour, the artworks will become acoustically enlivened scenes and living spaces for imaginary citizens of a città irreale, a city that does not exist, but could.
